If you have been around me for any significant amount of time lately, you might have heard me talk about the mixed emotions that come when your LAST-born is whipping through the milestones. Watching the youngest and last baby seem to fly through the first year is both beautiful and bittersweet.
Fun fact: Tyler would have had a Duggar sized family, I think. He loves being a dad and has eternal patience, and would have loved a lot of kids. I actually always envisioned myself being a mom of two, but we compromised on a third. When I got pregnant with Lincoln, we knew we were done having children. Immediately after my C-Section with him– I had a tubal ligation. While I was absolutely 1000% sure this was the right decision for our family, there is something about that permanence that takes some getting used to.
With the third and final baby, I have learned a few things and I’m a different mom. I am not in a rush to get to the next stage. If he falls asleep on me, I let him stay there. I study him longer and pay attention to every single detail. Every morning, he’s grown more. Every day, he is doing something brand new.
While there is beauty in growth and I LOVE watching all of my kids reach new heights, knowing that this is the LAST-FIRST time for everything, can really sting. In talking to other moms, it seems to be a normal emotion. With the other two kids, there was always a sense of “I get to experience this all over again, later.” With Lincoln, it’s a stark difference. I am constantly very aware that this is the last FIRST tooth. This is the last FIRST babble. These will be the last FIRST steps.
I’m not in a hurry and I hope Lincoln isn’t either. I want to savor every moment of this first year and remember every single milestone in detail. I am taking ALL the photos, and writing down ALL the memories. There’s just something special about the last baby.
Carter’s has always been one of my favorite brands to outfit my babies, especially in their first year. Their sweet and simple, timeless clothes are right up my alley. I am a big fan of neutral colors and classic styles, like this adorable romper.
