If you asked me a year ago if I would be taking Charlie to her first Nutcracker Ballet with Tyler’s lovely girlfriend in 2021, I’m not sure I would’ve believed I could be so lucky.

But here we all are.

Listen. Other people's opinions can to get to me.

By nature, I desire validation (especially from people I love). When it's noticeably absent- or even replaced with criticism or skepticism, I have the tendency to be affected.

In talking to others (specifically women and mothers), it seems I'm far from alone. Yeah?⠀

We're not momming hard enough. We're not working hard enough. We're not learning hard enough. We're not partnering hard enough. We're not homemaking hard enough. { insert whatever else }⠀

Someone will always think you aren't enough. Someone will always think they know what's best for you. But, here's what I've learned.

It's not your problem.⠀

People bring their own crap to the table. You might be perceiving that they are uncomfortable with your journey- but what you aren't hearing is how unhappy they are with their own journey. You hear disdain, when it might be jealousy, insecurity, or guilt speaking.

It's not about you. It was never about you.⠀

All that to say, keep doing you. We live in a time where we can be an amazing mom AND almost anything else we want to be at the exact same time. That's not a pity, that's a privilege.

Keep hustling. You're doing a good job.⠀

To recap… after Lincoln was born for some reason, migraine attacks became a regular part of my life, especially when I’m expecting my period to start.

Now I will never be without Nurtec® ODT (rimegepant) 75 mg.

I have tried other treatments in the past, but Nurtec ODT works great for me and I have not experienced negative side effects. Christmas cards are flooding in as fast as tears are flooding out.

Seeing my friends’ sweet faces and weeping with gratitude. I would not have survived the last couple of years without my chosen family.

I learned a lot about friendship this year. The last two years, really.

I learned that people who really see you and choose you when they don’t have to are a gift. The value of those bonds can’t be quantified.

I learned that my life can get difficult enough to the point where I actually CAN’T physically or emotionally show up and that’s not some thing I thought could ever happen. I pride myself on being a good friend, but this year took so much energy out of me I barely had enough to get up every day.

I learned that losing masks and revealing the ugliest sides of yourself- can show you who is willing to walk through the fire with you. It is scary but also humbling to see who is STILL there…and who is newly there when you’re in the trenches.

I learned that my brain lies about my value to people. People that I convinced myself didn’t even like me showed up for me in HUGE ways. Our brains can be so dumb.

Finally, I learned that when I have an opportunity to be on the other side, the way my friends have been, to have more grace for people. I learned that sometimes people just… can’t. Because a lot of the time this year… I couldn’t.

And my people loved me through it.
And there are too many to even tag.

And I can’t think of anything I’m more grateful for in this moment as 2021 comes to a close.

Being a good mom looks like admitting you’re stumped and researching your way to solutions.

Being a good mom sometimes looks like being brave enough to ask for and accept help. ⠀

Being a good mom is setting your alarm to take your meds and having the strength to follow through with a treatment plan that you wish you didn't need.⠀
⠀
Being a good mom might mean ending a romantic relationship that isn’t a healthy demonstration of love.
⠀
Being a good mom might be taking more breaks alone than someone else in your Instagram feed who probably doesn't have the same self-care needs that you do. ⠀
⠀
Being a good mom means turning off the FB mom groups, information overload and conflicting rhetoric and doing exactly what you know is best for your family. ⠀

Being a good mom might mean flipping a table here and there to advocate for moms everywhere.
⠀
You are the mitochondria of the family cell. You are the “load bearing” wall of the house.

Your happiness and health is what your children need. What that looks like for you and your family is no one else’s business.⠀

Motherhood is a challenging journey that is often further complicated by past traumas and mental health diagnoses. It’s a daily battle that can easily leave us feeling like failures.
⠀
Remember that no matter what anyone else wants you to think, you’re a good mom.

And so am I.

Once upon a time, A pair of really good friends

Once upon a time,

A pair of really good friends who’d known each other for a lifetime fell kinda hard for each other.

Timing, stigma, societal expectations, and every old wound they both carried were against them, but a bond like theirs is rare.

They decided to choose each other. They decided to choose love: the verb kind.

POV: You are with a mom in her (wrecked) minivan (that doubles as a landfill) after drop off on Friday morning.

There’s an unidentifiable smell (and when even was the last oil change…?).

You’re looking at a gal who needs to hurry home to get the trash pulled out to the road, take her ADHD meds, and get going on her task list.

It’s time to shop for Christmas but she’s a freelancer so she needs to put on her bill collector hat first…

But after coffee. And meds. And trash. And blankly staring at the insurmountable chaos.

She forgot to take her makeup off before bed because she’s really tired.

She also really needs to wash her hair today. Or buy more dry shampoo.

Her house is a mess and she’s seriously contemplating just throwing away some of the dirty dishes.

She’s spent more hours than usual this week Googling the right thing to do for a variety of parenting issues spread across three different age groups.

She will probably spend the day trying to cram in work and forget to pack the kids for their dad’s house until the last minute like she does every Friday.

She’s me.
Maybe she’s you too.

Raise your hand if you were raised in religious ba

Raise your hand if you were raised in religious based purity culture -slash- were exposed to zero conversations about sexual health, safety, preferences and pleasure. 🙋🏼‍♀️

Raise your other hand if that combo made it nearly impossible to mentally separate sexuality from shame. 🙋🏼‍♀️

You might have no more hands to raise, but if you did, I bet you might also be able to raise a hand that you’ve experienced sexual abuse or trauma in some way. 🙋🏼‍♀️

(Statistically, it’s almost half of women and that’s just what’s reported.)

These things are so common and so many of us were raised this way, yet we wonder why we have issues with intimacy or have sexual preference awakenings suddenly in midlife.

We are shocked that our society traditionally doesn’t protect or even believe women, but this culture was curated by design for centuries to protect and empower the patriarchy.

In therapy early this year, I was unpacking some complex sexual trauma from my early life and in closing I nodded matter of factly and said “Exactly. I am not here to be sexual!”

My therapist stopped me and said “No, Katie, you ARE. You are a human who is built for sensuality and sex and there is a medium here. You should be consenting and controlling those experiences but you should not at all avoid your sexual desire. Sex/sensuality is NOT innately dark or dirty.”

What a concept. I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to fully embrace the freedom and autonomy I should feel over my own body and sexuality, but I can tell you that every single step towards deconstructing embedded beliefs around sex, shame, and “purity” has been 100% worth the emotional labor.

So here’s another picture of me in my underwear, because it’s just a body.

That I have full jurisdiction over.

And it’s allowed to be sexy in any way I deem safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.

No one else gets to decide that for me ever again. (And that’s on psychological breakthroughs and taking back your power.) 🤗
