With two babies still in diapers and only twenty-three months apart, a shared diaper bag became something that I had to figure out quickly.

It takes tremendous skill and talent to pack a diaper bag, you guys. There’s a fine line between WAY too much stuff and being caught with not enough supplies in a baby crisis. A couple of years ago, I talked about my diaper bag for just Charlie as a baby. This time, I am spilling how to pack a bag that your toddler and baby can share. I think I have found the perfect list and I am happy to share it!

The first important thing is choosing the right diaper bag. After my second baby, I learned that a backpack style bag was the most convenient for me. It was easy to carry everything and still be hands free. It’s also convenient when wearing a baby on the front, which I commonly do.

Next up: CONTENTS.

Again, I tried to make this list the bare bones necessities based on my experience. I thought to myself: what do you need IMMEDIATELY when you need it.

1 | Lightweight Blanket

The multi-function must-have! This can be used as an emergency diaper changing pad, a nursing cover, a burp rag, a towel, or- duh- a blanket!

2 | Gas Drops

I was trying to think of which medicine is best to have on hand at all times. Obviously, you can’t carry the whole pharmacy. I decided that gas drops are best when the littlest has a bout of gas pains.

3 | Emergency Bottle and Formula

Lincoln is breastfed, but I keep a bottle and a serving of formula in the bag, just in case. Back story: I had a crazy health incident when Charlie was a newborn and was solely breastfed. I went to the hospital in an ambulance and left my family scrambling to find formula to give her. Now, I am paranoid and have it on deck.

4 | Toddler Snack and Water Bottle

Hell hath no fury like a toddler without a snack and drink. Packaged snacks last longer than something you might throw in a sandwich bag, and reusable water bottles are best!

5 | Pacifiers

If your babes don’t love a pacifier, you can skip this one- but mine do, and we CANNOT wind up somewhere without a backup. We have been known to lose them like crazy.

6 | Hand Sanitizer

Because the outside world is disgusting.

7 | “Burp Cloths”

Veteran mom hack: I use these pre-fold cloth diapers as burp cloths. They are cheaper and better, in my opinion! Babies are MESSY, so I always keep a few in the bag.

9 | A Change of Clothes

As soon as you choose not to pack a change of clothes, I PROMISE they will ruin what they have on. I pack a footed sleeper for each of them, in case it’s cool wherever they are when they ruin their clothes.

10 | Diapers

Of course, you need diapers! I usually keep about four per kid in the bag.

11 | Wipes

If you have diapers, ya gotta have wipes. I keep quite a few of these in the diaper bag, because they are so necessary for so many different things!

12 | Diaper Cream

Diaper cream, the holy grail. Don’t get caught without it, ladies and gents. My particular tried and true favorite is Boudreaux’s Butt Paste®.

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste® has three different formulas that help to protect and treat diaper rash- Original, Maximum Strength and Natural. Each product uses a combination of simple and effective ingredients to instantly protect irritated skin. The Boudreaux’s Butt Paste® formula was developed by a pharmacist and a father of four back in the 70’s, and started as a somewhat of a “secret remedy” among pediatricians. Boudreaux’s Butt Paste® starts relieving on contact and is paraben, preservative, and phthalate-free.
