Motherhood is undoubtedly an experience that operates on a trial and error system. It’s mostly “on-the-job” training. Everyone’s journey is different, but the same. All moms feel similar emotions, have sleepless nights and love their babies fiercely. We aren’t all that different. That said, I want to broach something that has been on my mind. In social media, I see a lot of women complaining about unsolicited advice from their friends, mother-in-law, or even strangers in the grocery store. There are baby tees that say “My Mom doesn’t want your advice”. It seems like mothers in general are getting more and more frustrated with the notion of another Mother having advice for us.
Now. Stay with me here, I am talking to myself just as much as I am talking to you. I have been thinking on this a lot lately, and I think we could benefit from a new perspective. I want you to ask yourself, “What about advice from another mother is upsetting to me?” “Why am I annoyed?”
I get it. I have been there dozens of times. Someone tells me what worked for their baby and I internally roll my eyes and think “That would never work for mine.” or “That is totally outdated information.” and that’s ok, but GUYS. We are a team. We are a tribe. Maybe, your mother-in-law, friend, or stranger at Walmart has an idea that you haven’t thought of yet. Maybe, we could think beyond the annoyance and be grateful that another mother cares enough to offer her help.
I challenge my fellow mothers to be more patient and show a little more grace when an opinion is offered. Yes, there are people whose goal is to offend. However, I believe those people are far and few between. For the most part, we are people who want to help, and we are people who want to share what we know. Let’s try and remember that then next time we have the chance.
I remember my very first baby shower. I was 23 years old and 32 weeks pregnant with Grayson. I had no idea what becoming a mother would look like, and I waited with anticipation. I opened gifts wondering what would fit, what toys he would like, what would need to be returned, and where I would put the decor. Then, I got to a big bag full of small wrapped items. It was from my best friend in the world who had preceded me into the mom ranks. One by one, I opened each thing. There were remedy bottles and droppers, personal care items, and other health related gifts. I hadn’t thought to register for that! But, you know who had? My friend. She had been at this for two years and she knew what needed to be handy at a moment’s notice.
I had read the books. I had looked at the websites, but, I hadn’t been in the trenches yet. This is just one example of many, but now that I am two kids in, I know how important that bag was. She went past my registry to give me a bag of things she knew I would need and it was so meaningful to me. For the last seven years, I have been duplicating the same idea for friends with new babies.
With that said, I want to give you an idea of what to put in your “Remedy Kit” for the new baby. Your items may be different from mine, but these are some ideas including the core items that I have grown attached to over the years and how to build the kit.
Step One
Purchase or re-purpose a basket or bin that can later double as a caddy for baby related items.
Step Two
Add the following products:
Nasal Aspirator
Thermometer
Extra Dosing Syringes
Lovie or Stuffed Animal
Little Remedies® Saline Drops
Pain Reliever
Little Remedies® Gas Relief Drops 1oz (Little Remedies® Gas Drops 1 oz. are on rollback at Walmart for only $7.17!)
These drops quickly relieve tummy pain from excess gas. These can be used from birth and believe me, you will use them! They have no artificial flavors or preservatives and are pediatrician recommended.
Little Remedies® Honey Cough Syrup 4oz. (Now on Rollback at Walmart for $5.97!)
Alas, our new found savior. This one can’t be used until baby is 12 months old*, but it’s my new favorite for simple, natural relief for little coughs. Charlie actually has a cough right now, and this cough syrup is making life a lot easier for her. It’s 100% natural with only three ingredients. It can be found in the back of the store in the baby section (NOT the pharmacy section). This product should not be used with colds or allergies, dry cough, irritants, or hoarseness.
What’s in your Remedy Kit? How do you feel about advice from other Moms? I would love to hear it in the comments!

January 6, 2017 at 11:25 amMy best friend also gave me these items and I did not think I would need them but within the first 2 months I needed them at night. I would also add baby tylenol ( they never get sick at 10am) and benedryl.
