If you follow me on social media, you know that we moved last week! We had about two weeks to move from the time we found the new house, so you can imagine the whirlwind. As the self-titled Crenshaw House Manager, I knew I had a busy couple of weeks ahead. I was also mildly nervous about moving with two kids. The last time I moved, Grayson was little but self-sufficient. He wasn’t in school yet, so that wasn’t an issue either. This time, I had to worry about transferring school districts for him, and work on moving while balancing school, baseball games, and a high needs toddler. I knew I was going to have to try some things differently than I had in the past. Here is what worked for me.
1 | Pack a little each day.
In the past, I have power-packed over the course of a couple days. I knew that wouldn’t work this time. As with everything parenting related, you never know when you will lose a whole day to a sick kid or other interruption. It was helpful to do a little at a time.
2 | Purge as you go.
One of my favorite things about moving is purging. It’s the perfect opportunity to only take what you need to your new home. Purging simplifies life and makes everything better, period.
3 | Ask for help.
There were a couple of days where I simply needed extra hands. Specifically, I needed someone to entertain Charlie so that I could run a few important errands related to the move. Don’t suffer in silence, just ask for help. Beg, if you have to.
4 | Drop any other optional obligations during the last two weeks before the move.
This isn’t always possible, but I will say that I had lightened my work load in the days preceding the move and it was tremendously helpful. As if I don’t have enough on my plate, right?
5 | HIRE TWO MEN AND A TRUCK.
This is not a drill. This is the sole best decision we made and I will never look back to the days of moving ourselves.
Two Men and a Truck has a sparkling reputation that precedes them. Since I have never had movers, though, I didn’t know what to expect. Guys. I could not have been happier and I don’t know how I ever would have managed without them. They showed up a few minutes before schedule to do a walk-through. I showed them what would stay and what would go and went over any other pertinent details. Shortly after, they got to work. They laid down runners all through the house to protect the floors. Then, they put pads and shrink wrap on all of my furniture for extra protecting. (The best part about the shrink wrap, by the way, is that I didn’t have to empty dresser drawers!)
After that, they moved at the speed of light. They carefully and cheerfully loaded our three bedroom house into a truck with Tetris level skills. They double checked with me if they had any questions about anything throughout the day and asked me often if I was happy with the service so far. Duh, yes, more than happy! I felt like I should be doing something, which would have been even more awkward if they had seemed inconvenienced or tired- but they didn’t! All day, they seemed so happy to be doing their job. They went above and beyond to make sure I was happy and satisfied. At one point, I was sitting down in a chair, and they actually went to the truck to locate and dig out my matching ottoman so that I would have a foot rest. I am a firm believer that going the extra mile in service can make all the difference.
We got a “day of the move” box from TMT for the kids that was GENIUS. It was full of activities for Grayson and fun things for Charlie, too! After everything was moved and over, TMT made sure everything was where I wanted it and that I was totally happy. They very professionally went over my estimate and the accuracy of the finished invoice. The entire process was professional, efficient, and positive and I will never use another moving company. I highly, HIGHLY recommend Two Men and a Truck for your next move.

Love this article. I am also looking for advice when it comes to moving. My son is almost 4 and we are planning a cross country move next year. I am trying to plan everything now so that it’s not so overwhelming When the time comes.
I’ll have to check out two men and a truck. I know they are here locally, but don’t know if they do cross country.
