Mothers Day is in tomorrow and I have seen more posts on social media from moms wishing someone would BEGGING someone to clean their house for a gift. Not asking for jewelry… or a handbag… but, pleading with the internet to send a house cleaning fairy. What better time to send these pleas into the universe than the week of Mothers Day? Amen, sisters. I have to say, I am right there with these other mamas. You may have read my blog post earlier this week about this and other gifts of service that would be a great way to show a mom you care.
Here’s some real life stats for you. A recent Merry Maids study revealed that 70% of moms say their definition of a “clean house” has gotten a lot less stringent since having kids. But despite learning to live with a messier home, nearly 9-in-10 moms feel stressed when their home is messy.
I loathe keeping house with every fiber of my being. At the same time, I like to live in a tidy and clean house. This presents a huge problem. Why couldn’t my DNA be as such to where I liked a tidy house AND liked to clean? Or, even, hated cleaning but was totally ok living in squalor? It’s not fair, I tell you.
Allow me to explain my top five hated chores and why they are a waste of time.
Picking up toys
I shouldn’t even have to explain this one. If you have had kids who are too little to efficiently clean up after themselves, then you know what I am talking about. My living room has toys scattered EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME and there is literally no point in picking anything up, unless I just really enjoy burning a ton of calories with squats and lunges all day.
Folding laundry
Why do we fold laundry? Who decided this was a good idea? Think about it. Think about all the wasted time between folding clothes and putting them in drawers only to be taken out and worn and it starts over. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely think you should keep your clothes clean, but folding just feels like overkill. (Maybe I am just telling myself that to appease some guilt, but I digress.) Personally, I like the giant piles of clean clothes, just sitting there, waiting on their owners to come dig out their OOTD.
Mopping
Be honest, you hate mopping, too. It’s easier to wet a dishcloth, throw it on the unidentified sticky part of the floor and push it around with your foot until it’s gone. (Maybe you use your hand, but I can’t bend over, so I use my foot.) I don’t have time to mop the whole house, especially at a time when no one is going to walk on it (which is never). And the WHOLE floor isn’t messy, right? Just spots!
Making beds
This is kind of like laundry, except I have mixed feelings about it. I am so happy when my bed is made. My day feels accomplished and I feel like an adult. However, when I’m crunched for time, bed making is one of the first things to get the axe. We are getting back in bed like 14 hours after we get out, right? Don’t bother.
Truthfully, I hate all chores and I wish there was a magic wand that I could wave to clean my house every morning/night. The next best thing is Merry Maids! I am confident that I can speak for many when I say that there is no better gift than the gift of a good house cleaning. January 29, 2018 at 2:30 pmThis is such a great point to make. Many think hiring help is a defeat, when really the opposite is true. Hire help for chores, and you are basically paying to have your time be your time. Especially as a parent!
I came across a saying today, ‘stop cleaning the house and start feeding the soul’.
