I’ve partnered with Rugs USA to bring you this post. I was gifted a rug. All opinions and content are mine.
As a stay at home mom, our living room is mine and the kids’ central location. We don’t have another family room or a playroom, so I try to do my best at making the main part of the house safe for Charlie to play, but also not like my house turned into a daycare center. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I do love my decor more than I like primary colors and Disney characters… That said, here are a few things I did to baby proof my living room with regular home decor.
The first thing I did was get rid of the coffee table. The room is small as it is, and I wanted Charlie to have room to play. Not only that, but corners. Yuck/Ouch.
I still wanted something free standing that Charlie could pull up on, and we could rest our feet on if we wanted. I decided the answer would be a pouf or a soft ottoman. I went with the pouf!
Right now, my favorite blanket is hanging out on the hearth to avoid injuries there, and I have tension rod baby gates up at the stairs and doorways.
I wanted a softer place for Charlie to play, right in front of the sectional sofa. Instead of buying some brightly colored alphabet foam tiles, I decided to go with this shag rug… and I LOVE IT.
This rug, from Rugs USA, is called the Erin Soft Trellis Shag Rug. I chose a light color to brighten my living room a bit and contrast with my ugly carpet in my rental house. I love the geometric pattern, too.
I can’t even tell you how many compliments I have already gotten from people who have seen it in photos or in real life! It’s just the softest, prettiest, homiest rug.
It really looks amazing and the obvious bonus is that it doubles as a super soft place for Charlie to play.
I wanted to show you that you can transform a space into an injury free play zone without losing your “grown up” aesthetic. If you have to be in that room all day, you better like it too!

May 11, 2016 at 2:10 pmYes! I want at least a little bit of style and decor without looking like the daycare center! love the pouf and love the rug too! I’ve never ordered from rugs usa but i love the look of their rugs. Our babies aren’t crawling yet, but I’m going to need to change out ours. I previously bought one to cover our ugly rental carpet too, but it’s not soft and it seems holds dirt. We’ll have to take it up soon.
