Did you know that I lived in South Carolina for two years after college? I lived in a city called Beaufort on the coast of the lower part of South Carolina that borders Georgia. I absolutely loved my stent in the low country and missed it often! While I lived there I visited Charleston from time to time, and fell in love with it at first sight. I have not been to Charleston in at least 10 years, so having the opportunity to go visit a couple weeks ago was truly a treat.
What you should know about Charleston is that it is the perfect city to experience true southern charm. I often have people ask me where they should visit between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina… and I always say Charleston. It’s just such a perfect combination of history, trendy developments, not overly crowded with people, and beautiful landscape. Lucky for me it is also drivable from Atlanta, five hours to be exact. I borrowed a brand new, fully loaded Mazda CX-30 to make the drive- and let me tell you. I was spoiled. The sunroof was perfect for the gorgeous weather and the incredible sound quality made my five-hour jam session a blast. I loved that I could see the odometer in the windshield and enjoyed many other new features that make it easy to pay attention to the road. Although I had the space and convenience of an SUV, the car was easy to handle and got great gas mileage. Check out the new Mazda CX-30 if you are in the market for something new!

Like a lot of my trips, I was only there for a little short of two days for the weekend, but I had some lovely experiences I wanted to share with you.

We have to start with where we stayed, because it made the entire trip. We stayed at a place called The Cottages on Charleston Harbor. We had an entire cottage complete with a kitchen, screened in back porch, and cozy common living spaces. The location of the cottages are perfectly nestled just on the other side of the bridge in Mount Pleasant. I stayed with a girlfriend on this trip, but I can’t wait to take my family back to experience Charleston. The cottages would be perfect for a family trip.

Our Uber rides into downtown Charleston were quick and affordable. The entire property is gorgeous and fun to stroll around in your downtime. There’s a beautiful pool onsite, bikes to borrow and endless spots to watch the sunset or rise. The staff was always helpful and accommodating and we loved the continental breakfast served in the clubhouse every morning.

Again, I feel like we needed so many more days to experience Charleston, but I absolutely loved everything we got to see and do in our short weekend. Charleston is bursting with stories of times past. There’s delicious food on every corner, and photo ops galore. If you have the “lowcountry” on your bucket list, make sure to research all the wonderful streets to stroll and admire the beautiful homes and history of downtown. There is something there for everyone.
