5 Ways To Conquer Cold & Flu Season

The leaves are falling, there is a chill in the air, and the flu shot reminders are on marketing platforms everywhere. As someone who has spent the last ten years in healthcare, I am no stranger to the wrath of flu season. Many people choose to vaccinate against the flu and many don’t. It’s a personal preference that is made by individual families (as it should be). Aside from the great vaccination debate, we should all be prepared for flu season since it’s the time of year we are all more likely to pick up the nasty bug and share it with our family. While getting vaccinated lowers our risk, it doesn’t ensure that everyone in the family won’t get the flu or a similar virus. There are five main things I do to ramp up our defenses.

1 | Learn about natural remedies to use in conjunction with medication and other treatments.

I am somewhere in between crunchy and, well, not. I believe in lots of holistic remedies and natural treatment of illness. I believe in healing our bodies with nutrition AND with the medicine of the modern world. One thing I love to have on hand for cold and flu season is an arsenal of essential oils. I won’t get into the extensive list and benefits here, but there is an oil for everything. Some can be ingested, some are rubbed on the skin, some can be diffused into the air, but if you have a symptom- there is probably an oil for it.

2 | Have plenty of fluids on hand.

Ahh. The recommendation from all doctors since the beginning of time. “Prescription : Rest and Fluids.” Right? Have plenty of water and electrolyte infused beverages should anyone need them. A hydrated body is like a well-oiled machine. It has the fuel it needs to function at maximum capability.

3 | Keep sick people at home.

People say this all the time, but it’s so important. If you or your kids are sick, don’t go infect the rest of your workplace or school. This is exactly how illness spreads, especially at this time of year when there is always a larger outbreak of influenza and other seasonal viruses.

4 | Know the early signs of illness and treat early.

Stay on top of symptoms before they get on top of you. At the first sign of illness, start hydrating, increasing your intake of immune building nutrients, and resting. Don’t let pain get out of control before you treat it, and don’t wait until you are in the trenches of being sick before you seek medical attention.

5 | Have a “sick kit” ready.

I like to have all the supplies I need in my house before I actually need them. The middle of the night on a Saturday is no time to realize you don’t have what you need to treat a sick kid. One new addition to my kit is FeverAll® suppositories. Being fever-ready is important. FeverAll® Infants’ Strength Suppositories (80 mg of acetaminophen) is the only acetaminophen product available with dosage instructions for children as young as six months of age. You can do your own research on when a fever is high enough to treat. We know that low grade fevers are important to fighting infection, but when we cross that threshold, I want to be ready to reduce it. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, fever in babies begins at 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit.  Of course, call your physician about any concerns with fever in your child. The thing about little ones, is that sometimes taking oral medication can be difficult or impossible due to age, vomiting or even excessive crying. You can find these in your local Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens and Walmart stores. For more information on FeverAll and current offers, please visit www.FeverAll.com05a0a432-6f86-11e6-abe8-22000a7d00a4
